Council approves updated social media governance policy

City of Cranbrook council Jan. 9 approved an updated social media governance policy.

This policy governs the publication, interaction and management of social media by both employees of the City of Cranbrook and by current and any future members of council, while providing guidance on the personal use of social media by employees and members of council when city interests may be impacted,” explained city communications director Chris Zettel in a council report.

“This policy is intended to ensure that social media communications are well coordinated, effectively managed and responsive to the needs of the public and respect all legislated requirements of the municipality around the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIPPA).”

The policy and procedure will be reviewed every three years, with the next review scheduled for 2026.
