Cranbrook student to represent Canada internationally

Keanu Chan

Youth Science Canada has unveiled the names of eight outstanding high school students who have been selected to represent the country at the 2024 Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), the world’s most prestigious youth STEM project competition from May 11 to 17 in Los Angeles, California.

And Cranbrook’s Keanu Chan is one of the eight acclaimed students chosen.

Each member of Team Canada-ISEF 2024 was selected based on the originality, scientific rigour, and potential impact of their projects.

The selected students will showcase their innovative projects, competing against 1,600 students from over 80 countries. The fair provides young scientists and engineers a unique platform to present their independent research and vie for nearly $9 million in awards, prizes, and scholarships.

“Youth Science Canada is thrilled to support such a talented group of young innovators representing our country,” said Reni Barlow, executive director of Youth Science Canada, the national charitable organization behind Team Canada-ISEF since 1995. “These students exemplify the best of Canadian ingenuity and the spirit of scientific inquiry. We are confident that their pioneering projects will compete globally and contribute to solving some of the world’s most pressing challenges.”

Team Canada-ISEF 2024 comprises (left to right and top to bottom in the above photo):

  • Keanu Chan – Cranbrook, British Columbia – PRecision Exospinal Constructive Innovative Stereotactic Evolution (PRECISE).
  • Elizabeth Chen – Edmonton, Alberta – Predicting Patient Response to CAR-T Cell Therapy using Computational Methods for Biomarker Identification.
  • Cindy Cheng – Waterloo, Ontario – 3D Bioprinting Soft Microrobotic “Niches” for Stem Cell Delivery.
  • Chloe Filion & Sophie Filion – Fenwick, Ontario – The Digital Air Rifle Ballistic Measuring Device.
  • Gurnoor Kaur – Waterloo, Ontario – MalaScope – A Low-Cost Deep Learning Sensor for Label-Free Detection of Malaria.
  • Arushi Nath – Toronto, Ontario – Developing Algorithms to Determine Asteroid’s Physical Properties using Sparse and Dense Photometry, Robotic Telescopes, Open Data and Math.
  • Jason Zhao – Vancouver, British Columbia – Low Cost Rapid Response Rocket launched UAV for Wildfire Hotspot Detection.

“These young scientists and engineers represent the bright future of Canada on the global stage. We have every confidence that they will inspire their peers and the next generation of innovators with their creativity, passion, and visionary projects,” said Prof. Patrick Whippey, chair of the selection panel for Team Canada-ISEF 2024.

The YSC Team Canada-ISEF program is made possible thanks to the Gwyn Morgan & Patricia Trottier Foundation, through its Youth Can Innovate program.
