Cruiser struck as driver flees police

On Sunday, March 23, at approximately 2:30 p.m., Cranbrook RCMP members attempted a traffic stop on a silver Pontiac Sunfire in the Tamarack Mall parking lot situated at 1500 Cranbrook St N.

The vehicle fled from police but was observed shortly after on 14th Avenue South speeding past other motorists. A member patrolling on 14th Avenue quickly activated emergency equipment and blocked 2nd St. South traffic from entering the intersection to avoid a major collision. The silver Sunfire made light contact with the police car as it passed, fleeing south on 14th Avenue.

In both incidents RCMP members disengaged for the safety of the other vehicle and pedestrian traffic in the areas, explained S/Sgt. Barry Graham, Cranbrook RCMP Detachment commander.

The silver Sunfire was later reported abandoned in the Gold Creek area and seized by police.

Cranbrook RCMP request anyone with related dash cam or personal surveillance video to contact them at 250-489-3471. This would include 14th Avenue from Baker Street through to Gold Creek at 33rd Street S from 2:30 to 4 p.m.
