Did you know about breastfeeding?

As Canadians, it is our human right and the right of our babies to breastfeed anytime, anywhere, anyhow!
Here are some important facts about breastfeeding.
– In 2001, WHO (World Health Organization) recommended six months of exclusive breastfeeding for newborn babies, and in 2004 Health Canada aligned its recommendation with that of WHO.
– WHO recommends breastfeeding a child to the age of two years and beyond.
– In 2009 about 87% of women in Canada initiated breastfeeding after the birth of their baby. â¨(Stats Canada)
– In 2009, (only) 24.4% of women who gave birth in the past five years gave their babies breast milk exclusivelyâno water, other liquids or solid foodâfor six months or longer. (Stats Canada)
– Breastfeeding protects against respiratory infections, Chron’s disease, bacterial meningitis, intestinal infections, vision problems. (Infact Canada)
– Breastfeeding decreases chances of developing juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, certain cancers, ear infections, asthma, allergies, diabetes, osteoporosis. (Infact Canada)
– Breastfeeding decreases the occurrence of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). (Infact Canada)
– Breastfeeding is associated with higher IQ. (Infact Canada)
– Breastfeeding decreases postpartum hemorrhage, postpartum depression and certain cancers in â¨mothers. (Infact Canada).
Obviously breastfeeding is not only good for babies, but for mothers, families, our community and the environment. â¨How can we, as a community, support breastfeeding mamas?
Respect, accept and encourage breastfeeding mamas! Say something like âWay to go!â or âWhat a lucky boy/girlâ when you see a mama breastfeeding in public.
Make our establishments around town âbreastfeeding friendly.â It doesn’t have to be fancy â just welcoming, accepting and comfortable. Post a sign out front or use the International symbol for breastfeeding in your window. âThis restaurant is breastfeeding friendly!â or âBreastfeeding welcome here!â

– Breastfeeding Mamas! A peer support group meets second Monday of the month at Cranbrook Family Connections. (For more go HERE). Groups are also running in Kimberley, Invermere, Fernie and Sparwood.
– Private Lactation Consultant;
– Public Health Nurses offer breastfeeding support;
– East Kootenay Midwives provide breastfeeding encouragement and support;
– Local doulas can help you get breastfeeding off to a good start immediately following birth;
– Online resources like: LLLI.org, drjacknewman.com and kellymom.com.
Breastfeeding is normal. It is not always easy or natural. Breastfeeding Mamas need encouragement, support and community to meet their breastfeeding goals! Let’s walk along side them on their journey. One step at a time!
