Further reduction of creek flow into Phillips Reservoir

Joseph Creek Levels

Even as Phillips Reservoir holds full pool, further reduction of water flowing in from both Joseph and Gold Creeks has been measured by City of Cranbrook administration over the past two weeks.

Administration provided an update to council again Monday night, around the status of the city’s watershed as we head into the hotter summer months.

Gold Creek Levels

The average water flow through the Phillips Reservoir sits currently at 3.65 million imperial gallons (16.3 million litres) per day, an increase from 3.2 million imperial gallons (13.7 million litres) per day reported two weeks ago.

Increased outdoor water use for lawns and gardens continues to be the most significant driver behind the increase of water flow through the reservoir.

Accumulated Precipitation June 4 – 18

Despite nearly 15mm of rainfall in the watershed since June 4, the Gold Creek reservoir has dropped again since the previous update to council on June 10, and as a result administration has now closed the Gold Creek flood gates to store as much water as possible.

“We do have one of our production wells online now, helping to add an additional 386 thousand imperial gallons (1.75 million litres) of water to the system daily, with another of our production wells expected to come online later in July,” said Jason Perrault, Deputy Director of Public Works.

“Even with the additional water in the system, we continue to ask residents to remain committed to our current water restrictions.

The commitment of our residents so far this year has been excellent, and we encourage people to continue to do so.”

The city remains in Stage 2 water restrictions until further notice.
