Heritage tourism opportunities in Cranbrook take centre stage

Cranbrook Tourism is holding its annual general meeting (AGM) this Thursday, April 27, at 7 p.m. at the Cranbrook History Centre (pictured).

The AGM will review the accomplishments of 2022, provide an update on the tourism master plan, and feature a presentation from Berdine Jonker, of Heritage BC, on the value of heritage tourism.

The meeting will begin with a report on the past year’s accomplishments, including notable events, marketing campaigns, and achievements in tourism development. The update on the tourism master plan will provide insight into the long-term strategy for enhancing Cranbrook’s tourism offerings.

Following the official business of the AGM, Berdine Jonker will discuss the value of heritage tourism and how it can contribute to the local economy.

Jonker (CAHP) is a heritage conservation professional with over 20 years of experience working in British Columbia. Her experience includes both running a private heritage consultation business and employment in the public service (Government of British Columbia). Berdine’s strength in heritage conservation practice focuses on the advancement of values-based management of built and cultural heritage resources throughout B.C.

As an expert in the facilitation of community-based consultation on heritage values and historic place significance, Berdine’s work has influenced a spectrum of projects ranging from the development of a provincial heritage strategy to the physical conservation of National Historic Sites. She currently serves as a Director on the board of Heritage BC and as a board member for the BC chapter of the Canadian Association of Heritage Professionals.

“We’re honoured to have Berdine Jonker join us and share her knowledge and experience with our stakeholders,” said Cranbrook Tourism’s Executive Director Kristy Jahn-Smith. “Her insights into the value of heritage tourism will be invaluable as we continue to develop our tourism offerings.”

The AGM is open to all community stakeholders and anyone interested in the subject matter is welcome to attend.

Cranbrook Tourism is the destination marketing organization for Cranbrook and region. The organization’s objective is to attract more visitors to the region, grow the visitor economy and contribute to improved quality of life for residents.

In 2022 Cranbrook Tourism assumed the operation of the city’s visitor information centres. www.cranbrooktourism.com
