ICE add to last line of D from Thunderbirds

The Kootenay ICE announced today (Jan. 8) that it’s acquired 1998-born goaltender Matt Berlin from the Seattle Thunderbirds. In exchange, the T-Birds receive a 2018 fifth round draft pick.

Berlin – a product of Edmonton, Alberta – has appeared in 24 games with the Thunderbirds this season. He has a goals against average of 3.40, a save percentage of .893, one shutout and a record of 12-7-2-1.

Berlin was part of the Thunderbirds team that captured the Ed Chynoweth Cup in 2017.

“We look forward to Matt joining our group and providing a veteran presence at a key position,” said Matt Cockell, President and General Manager.

The Spokane Chiefs selected Berlin in the seventh round (148th overall) in the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft. He has played the entirety of his career in the U.S. Division since making his WHL debut in October 2015.

In 44 career WHL games between the Chiefs and Thunderbirds, Berlin has compiled a 20-10-6-1 record, 3.33 goals against average and a .891 SV% along with a single clean sheet.

Berlin joins Duncan McGovern and Bailey Brkin in the ICE’s blue paint.

The next home game for the ICE is Sunday, January 14 against the Saskatoon Blades. Puck drop is scheduled for 4 p.m. That’s a Family Fun Day game presented by Ktunaxa Nation Council and will include face painters provided by Painted Turtle, a photo booth by Jo Mckinstrie, family music and an Autograph Alley presented by Tim Hortons.

In addition, the game will mark the first annual Minor Hockey Night and the ICE will be holding Billet Recognition Night presented by Dean Cockell, Portfolio Strategies.

Tickets are still available and can be purchased online at ICEcountry.ca, at the ICE Gear Store at Western Financial Place or by calling 250-417-0322.
