Ice reserved for 2020 provincial curling championships bid
The City of Cranbrook is reserving ice time at Western Financial Place (or alternatively the Memorial Arena) in order to help the Cranbrook Curling Club’s bid to host the 2020 Men’s and Ladies Provincial Championship from January 20 – February 5 (2020).
Associated costs will be recovered through a potential partnership between the city and the Cranbrook Curling Club for ticket sales and sponsorships for the tournament.
The Cranbrook Curling Club is submitting a bid to host the 2020 Men’s and Ladies B.C. Provincial Championship. If successful it will be the first time since 1997 the city has hosted the event.
It is expected that 20 teams would take part in the event, which would take eight days, providing plenty of national exposure for the city, the curling club outlined in a Feb. 21 letter to the city.
“The Grand Slam of Curling provided great insight and practice for our community and we would like the privilege of helping put Cranbrook back on the ‘button’ as the hub of curling in southern B.C. After all, we have many players from Cranbrook and surrounding communities that are national and provincial champions and several who have made it to the Brier and Scotties (currently on TV),” noted Rick O’Neill, Cranbrook Curling Club president.
