IIO of BC investigating Cranbrook serious harm incident

The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating a September 2021 incident in Cranbrook where one man sustained serious injuries.

Information provided by the RCMP states that on September 9, 2021, police attempted to stop a red Pontiac Grand Prix. It is reported that the Pontiac did not stop.

The Pontiac was involved in collisions with police vehicles before coming to a stop. While being taken into custody, there was an interaction between the driver, a man, and police which included the use of a police service dog, the IIO of BC outlined in an information bulletin.

The IIO was notified of the incident on September 6, 2022, after the RCMP became aware of new information that the man’s injuries may meet the threshold of serious harm as defined by the Police Act.

The IIO has commenced an investigation, and initial investigative steps seek to confirm the level of injury.

The IIO is asking any person with relevant information or video footage regarding the incident to please contact the Witness Line toll-free at 1-855-446-8477 or via the contact form on the iiobc.ca website.

The IIO is the Independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
