Joseph Creek culvert removed; City issues cold water advisory to residents

Residents and children are advised that the culvert and bridge across Joseph Creek, behind St. Mary’s Catholic School has been removed and will be replaced, likely by the end of the year.

The culvert was removed in mid-October and had initially been barricaded with large concrete blocks and orange wooden barricades. However, residents in the area have reported seeing children use the orange barricades to construct a makeshift bridge to cross the creek.

This issue creates some very serious safety concerns and as such, the City of Cranbrook is issuing an advisory to residents to please do not try to cross Joseph Creek at this location until the bridge has been replaced.

“We see this as a very serious issue when it comes to the safety of our kids,” says Chris Zettel, Corporate Communications Officer for the City of Cranbrook. “I strongly encourage parents to explain to your kids the potential dangers of rivers and streams, especially this time of year. The water is extremely cold and the potential exists for thin ice to form which creates many dangers for kids who are unaware. We really want everyone to be safe.”

The city-owned orange barricades have since been removed; the concrete blocks remain.
