Logging truck activity to increase on Victoria Avenue
City of Cranbrook chief administrative officer David Kim Nov. 20 reported to council that Phase II of the city’s Watershed Timber Harvest Project will increase the volume of logging trucks on Victoria Avenue.
“Phase II of the city’s Watershed Timber Harvest Project with Canfor is set to commence mid-December. In addition to this project, Canfor has a second private logging project underway adjacent to the South Star Trails,” Kim said, noting the city’s Streets and Traffic Bylaw No. 3021, 1991, designates Victoria Avenue as a truck route in the city with no legal axle weight restrictions assigned.
“Canfor advises that hauling logs through a secondary route will impact the cost of the city’s timber harvest project by more than $16,000 and that their contractors working on the private logging project will be utilizing Victoria Avenue to haul logs. Recognizing the limited amount of hauling required for the city’s Watershed Timber Harvest project and the potential cost impact that it may have for current and future projects with partners, it is recommended that the city refrain from restricting hauling access on Victoria Avenue,” Kim reported.
“The city is actively undertaking a wildfire mitigation program in an efficient and effective manner and restricting access to the prescribed truck route could create a barrier to efficient and effective project management,” he concluded.
