What you need to know about Oct. 21 by-election

The nomination period has closed for candidates to run in the City of Cranbrook by-election set for Saturday, October 21.

In total, eight candidates completed the nomination process, and they are as follows (as they will appear on the ballot): Anna (Sam) Hudson; Mike Peabody; Lynn McIntosh; William McKerrow; Christy Wheeldon; Mike Barr; Jon McWhirter; Gavin Thomas.

A person is qualified to be nominated, elected, and to hold office as a member of council if they:

(1)  are a Canadian Citizen;

(2)  18 years of age or older;

(3)  have been a resident of British Columbia for at least 6 months immediately before 
the day nomination papers are filed; and

(4)  are not disqualified by the Local Government Act or any other enactment from voting in an 
election in British Columbia or from being nominated for, being elected to, or holding the office.

Candidates are eligible to withdraw from the by-election if they choose before 4 p.m. on Friday, September 22.

VOTING will be open to qualified electors of the City of Cranbrook as follows:

General Voting: Saturday, October 21 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Prestige Rocky Mountain Resort, 209 Van Horne Street, Cranbrook.

Advance Voting: Wednesday, October 11 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Wednesday, October 18 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Senior Centre, 125 – 17th Avenue South, Cranbrook.


In order to be able to vote, you must meet the following elector qualifications:

Resident Elector

(a)  is a Canadian citizen;

(b)  is, OR will be on October 21, 2017, age 18 or older;

(c)  has been a resident of British Columbia for the past six months;

(d)  has been a resident of the City of Cranbrook for the past 30 days; and

(e)  is not otherwise disqualified by law from voting.

RESIDENT ELECTORS may register on Voting Day at the Polling Station, if they meet these qualifications and provide two pieces of identification (at least one with a signature). Picture identification is not required. The identification must prove both residency and identity.

Non-Resident Property Elector

(a)  is not entitled to register as a resident elector of the City of Cranbrook;

(b)  is a Canadian citizen;

(c)  is, OR will be on October 21, 2017, age 18 or older;

(d)  has been a resident of British Columbia for the past six months;

(e)  has been a registered owner of real property in the City of Cranbrook for the past 30 days;

(f)  has received the written consent of a majority of the registered owners of the property designating you as the one who may vote (only one person may vote on the property qualification no matter how many owners there may be).

NON-RESIDENT PROPERTY ELECTORS may register on Voting Day at the Polling Station, if they meet the qualifications set out, have two pieces of identification (at least one with a signature to prove identity), PROOF OF OWNERSHIP OF THE PROPERTY and the WRITTEN CONSENT OF A MAJORITY OF THE REGISTERED OWNERS OF THE PROPERTY designating you as the one who may vote.
