New seniors’ care facility proposed

City of Cranbrook council Jan. 23 passed the first reading of a bylaw that could lead to the creation of a new seniors’ care facility in the city.

Bylaw No. 3888 is a proposed amendment of the city’s official community plan (OCP) to change the land designation from Highway Commercial to High Density Multiple Family Residential, to enable the rezoning and development of the property into a seniors’ living community.

Golden Life – 0945766 BC Ltd. is seeking to create a high-density, multi-family residential community on 2.23 acres of land at 620 and 616 Kootenay Street North.

In a letter to the city, Golden Life, which, operates Joseph Creek Village and other properties in B.C. and Alberta, noted the lack of sufficient land for seniors’ housing in the city.

It also points out the importance of the location, in this instance two empty lots across from the Days Inn Cranbrook.

“Senior housing is unlike apartments / condos; site location is a crucial factor to promote independence. Golden Life feels seniors should have the choice to enjoy amenities within a building or access public amenities within a short but safe walking distance away. A site that offers both residential setting and commercial businesses a short distance away is a perfect site for senior housing,” Golden Life explained., adding the project would be a “campus-style development offering independent living, assisted living and residential care, ensuring seniors can age in place.”
