Parade safety tips
Presented by the Sam Steele Society
As our city grows, so do the events and celebrations that bring us together. Every person plays a valuable role in the success and continuation of these festive occasions. Please do your part to ensure safety at every opportunity.
Sam Steele Days features the largest parade in the Kootenays. This year it takes place on Saturday, June 20.
The following are some safety tips for parade watchers and participants.
Ensure ALL children (even if they are not yours) remain on the sidewalk or shoulder of the road at all times while the parade is in procession.
Respect parade temporary barricades along parade route.
Parade entries:
Do not throw candy or other items to the audience from a moving vehicle. Children love to run out to scoop up these gifty items and, as they do, the travel space gets narrower for the parade entries behind you, increasing the safety hazard. Have walkers hand promo directly to the audience instead.
Make sure motorized vehicles are in good working condition ie: brakes, lights and visibility.
Have a fire extinguisher in good working condition included in your basic on-board tool kit on every float.
Please take a moment to stop and thank our parade volunteers. They provide a very valuable service that benefits each and every one.
