Pecha Kucha Night an evening of creative energy
New ideas and experiences are fun to share and learn from. Pecha Kucha Nights are an informal and entertaining gathering, which brings people together for an evening of quick-fire “show and tell” presentations.
The catch is that the presenters can only display 20 images for 20 seconds each so the presentations are less than seven minutes long. Started in Tokyo in 2003, this popular style of sharing stories and ideas with a 20 x 20 format has grown worldwide with over 900 cities participating.
Andra Louie, the local Pecha Kucha Night event organizer, spearheaded Pecha Kucha Cranbrook five months ago when she was brainstorming ideas to help foster community events that brought “thinkers and drinkers” together.
After receiving permission from Pecha Kucha Tokyo for Cranbrook to be an authorized city, she started making a list of people she knew that could tell some engaging stories. “There are a ton of people in the region with stories and experiences worth sharing, the trick was to see if they would put it into a 20 x 20 presentation. It’s not an easy assignment.”
Presenters for the opening Pecha Kucha Night are as diverse as they come with a mix of artists, entrepreneurs, travelers, thinkers, activists and educators.
Nine presenters are confirmed to share their stories on Thursday, May 4 at the Key City Theatre on the Galley Stage from 6-7:30 p.m.
Adding to fun will be the 5-6 p.m. pre-event featuring the popular DJ Nay Taron spinning records while the audience mixes and mingles.
Louie notes, “Bar service will be open throughout the event which is part of the spirit of Pecha Kucha Nights – it’s a relaxing and social atmosphere. It’s a great night to come out with friends and meet some new ones.”
Tickets for Pecha Kucha Night are $10 and available online at www.keycitytheatre.com and will also be available at the door, however there is limited seating.
