The most-recent class of provincial sheriffs graduated from the Justice Institute of British Columbia (JIBC) sheriff academy in New Westminster Jan. 15.

Twenty recruits have completed their intensive 14-week training program and are ready to serve at B.C. courthouses, including in Cranbrook.

“Congratulations to each of today’s new recruits,” said David Eby, Attorney General, during his visit to the graduation ceremony. “I am heartened to see so many of you dedicate yourselves to serving the province through this important role.”

The graduates have joined the ranks of sheriffs who are responsible for carrying out orders of the court and ensuring the safety and security of all court users, including the judiciary, the legal profession, other justice-related agencies, court staff and members of the public.

The B.C. Sheriff Service is recognized nationally for its training and is one of the founding members of JIBC. The recruit training program is recognized by the JIBC as a post-secondary certificate program.

“I’m proud to welcome these recruits, who bring a depth of work experience to the B.C. Sheriff Service,” said Lynda Cavanaugh, director of sheriffs, B.C. Sheriff Service. “The new graduates bring skills that combine well with the knowledge and expertise of our current members and enrich our service to the justice sector.”

“JIBC is proud of our longstanding partnership with B.C. Sheriff Service to provide a rigorous sheriff recruit training program,” said Michel Tarko, president and CEO, JIBC. “We congratulate the graduating sheriffs as they embark on their new careers in law enforcement.”

The recruits will be posted to Cranbrook, the Lower Mainland, Kelowna, Prince George and Terrace. The next class of sheriff recruits will begin on Feb. 25, with future classes scheduled for June and October.
