RCMP issue warning about fake warrant calls

Cranbrook RCMP reports it is has taken a number of reports from citizens this week advising they have been receiving phone calls where the subject on the line is claiming that there is a warrant for their arrest and personal information is demanded from the citizen including their social insurance number.

In some cases, the call display is showing the Cranbrook RCMP non-emergency line (250-489-3471). Electronic equipment now exists to alter the call display of the originating telephone number and it appears that this equipment is being used in these calls to trick citizens into providing banking and other information.

Cranbrook RCMP wishes to remind the public that the police will not call you looking for you SIN # or personal banking information. No legitimate company or government department will ask you to compromise any of your personal data over the phone or via computer message.

If you received such a call, you can report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or go HERE.
