Recycle program discriminates against strata owners
Letter to the Editor
Cranbrook’s Curb Side Blue Bin Recycle Program currently discriminates against general and bare-land Strata homeowners in Cranbrook.
As a strata homeowner in Cranbrook I am apparently not eligible for the city’s curb side blue bin recycle program. On April 26, I received a letter from Mayor Price stating, “Staff will be presenting to council an outline of what the costs, staff time required, timeframe and risks would be for implementation of curbside recycling for strata properties. Based on this information, council can make a decision on whether and when to implement curbside recycling for stratas.”
As I noted in a letter to Mayor and Council on April 3, the city signed a partnership agreement with Recycle BC for curbside recycling. My understanding is the city receives $263,041 per year from Recycle BC to provide recycling services to ALL residential households. I have not been able to find out from anyone why strata homeowners are not eligible for this service.
I pay city taxes and I also pay the recycle tax on a variety of BC consumer products like all residents.
The city is currently asking for public input via a survey called “Solid Waste Curbside Collection Public Consultation.”
I am encouraging all strata homeowners to complete the survey to provide the city with input from this large segment of the city residents. Please note that the survey is available on-line or a hard copy is available at the Cranbrook Library.
In order to be given an opportunity for proper feedback note that you should choose the answer to the first question carefully. I suggest you choose “No but I expect that I may in the future.”
