Segarty resigns from Royal BC Museum

After five years as a director for the Royal BC Museum, Cranbrook resident Terry Segarty has given his resignation.

“It has been my pleasure to have worked with such dedicated and distinguished volunteers,” said Segarty. “One of the many highlights was the Our Living Languages: First Peoples’ Voices in BC exhibition, and witnessing the touching reactions of the Indigenous youth who were given a preview of the display. I never felt our work more important.”

Segarty added he looks forward to seeing the committed and ongoing effort of the Royal BC Museum to repatriate sacred artifacts and culturally-significant belongings, currently stored in museum warehouses in Victoria, to the people and/or places in which they originated, and acknowledged “the important efforts of Premier Christy Clark to repatriate culturally-significant Indigenous belongings” that had been moved out of B.C.

“The Royal BC Museum has been in stage of redevelopment and I have great appreciation for its past, present, and future role in the Victoria community. Thanks to the leadership of Professor Jack Lohman, the museum is now recognized internationally. I’m sure with his continued leadership and support of the Board and Government, the redeveloped Royal BC Museum will be a treasured hub for generations to come, attracting people from all over the world to our awe-inspiring capital city and the gateway to our beautiful, diverse and culturally-brilliant province,” he stated.

Segarty, one of three people currently seeking the Kootenay East Liberal Party nomination (along with City of Cranbrook Coun. Tom Shypitka and former Kootenay-Columbia MP David Wilks of Sparwood) noted the Kootenays are also a provincial gateway, rich with art and culture.

Bill Bennett is not seeking re-election in the May 2017 provincial election.

“I am looking forward to applying the knowledge I have acquired during my role as director of the Royal BC Museum to enhance local tourism, as well as highlight the cultural and artistic opportunities that are of abundance in the area,” Segarty said.

“I offer sincere thanks to my fellow directors and the museum executive team, as well as express gratitude to the Honorable Peter Fassbender, Minister responsible for the museum, and the Honorable Bill Bennett, former Minister responsible for the museum, for their support of the Royal BC Museum over the last few years,” he said.
