Sunday Night Ukraine Vigils continue
From a spontaneous thought of two small town girls, stemming from the horrific tragic event of the war in the Ukraine, a candlelight vigil was born.
âFour weeks ago we decided to throw this together and built a Facebook page and reached out to the one Ukraine lady I knew in the area,â said Tamara Cartwright of East Kootenay Ukraine Support. âShe said âI will come and bring othersâ and they did. That was the first week and it continues to grow, but more support is needed!
âWe are also working in concert with other another committee that is hard at work as well trying to make other things happen. We just knew we had to get this moving and have cash for them in the next few weeks,â Tamara stated.
âThis week we decided to kick it up a notch and have had volunteers offer to make borsht and perogies. Barb Smyth of Aunties Barbâs Kitchen has kindly donated the space and equipment for us to get this project done,â she added.
âWednesday we cook soup; being made by the families that attend the vigil and Saturday we again will be at the bakery making and freezing perogies.
âWe are looking for some food and money donations at this time but will have pretty much Wednesday the 23rd to get them to us.
âSo please join us Sunday at 6-8 p.m. at Rotary Park to help make some much-needed money that is needed now for the local families of Cranbrook to be able to re unite with their families from Ukraine.
âWe will be serving hot borscht and a bun, hot tea, you will be able to purchase frozen perogies to take home. This is a cookie jar donation event. All food safety and covid protocols being followed.â
