United Way invests $69,000 in local projects

With community help, United Way East Kootenay in 2017 is able to invest in 16 local organizations to a total of $65,450 and will also invest $3,550 in the bc211 project, an initiative of BC United Ways.

“We wish to thank everyone who donated to our 2016 campaign,” said Executive Director, Donna Fields. Our United Way does not receive funding from any level of government or from United Way Canada so community support and engagement is crucial. Each year, community donations to our United Way ensure that funding continues to be directed towards programs and services that provide meaningful supports to vulnerable people in the East Kootenay.

Unfortunately, the 2016 campaign revenue results fell $30,000 from the previous year, which means that community investments and budget restraints were necessary for 2017. “Funding requests for 2017 totalled over $120,000,” Fields explained, adding, “requests came from within our three focus areas: All that Kids can be, Strong Communities and Poverty to Possibility.”

United Way East Kootenay’s Investment Committee prepared a list of recommendations and the Board of Directors reviewed and approved the $69,000 total at the February board meeting. The decision was based on extensive community connections and collaborations.

On average, United Way East Kootenay invests 83% of receipted donations back into the community each year through careful decisions by the Board of Directors in budgeting and financial considerations. The Canada Revenue Agency regulates that 80% of receipted donations received are invested back into the community while United Way Canada encourages a range closer to 85%.
