WILD Okotoks tourney for Junior Girls
By Kaley Wasylowich
With a long break at Christmas the Mount Baker Secondary School WILD Junior Girls started their winning run again against an unknown team (EP Scarlet from Calgary) in a tournament at Okotoks this past weekend.
With a lot of hustle and determination on defense and offence, the Baker girls found themselves up 26-7 in the first, playing hard all game with scoring coming from all teammates winning the game 79-31.
They went on to play ABE Aberhart from Calgary and knew they were in for a battle as they only beat them by 10 in a previous tournament. Coming out with all pistons firing, the Baker defense held their opponent to only two baskets in the first, up 24-4.
As the Baker girls settled in for a long tough game they went into half time up 45-23. The third was much the same offensively as they all worked hard, keeping their lead 59-36.
The fourth quarter was a different story, as Aberhart started a comeback. They got to within 10 points, but with a lot of heart and will power the Baker girls took the win with a final of 71-58.
Having played a tough and grueling first game, the girls were tired. They started the final against a much taller team but there was no stopping the WILD team and they were up 17-10 in the first. With their full court press and offensive skills to score, they remained up at half-time 34-18. The third started off at another fast pace with all girls working hard and getting tired. At one point the Lakers climbed back to within 12 but with the rotation of the girls they maintained their lead going into the fourth 47-27.
Containing the much taller team from scoring inside and rebounding hard on offensive and defensive, the Baker girls won 60-39 for a final score. They placed first overall in the tournament!
The Junior Boysâ WILDÂ team travelled to Creston this past weekend and came second overall losing to Creston in the finals.
This coming weekend, the Junior WILDÂ girls are going to Fernie and the Junior WILDÂ boys are going to Sparwood.
MBSS will be hosting a tournament for Senior boys on Jan 27/28.
