Bike to Work Week begins Monday
This year Bike to Work Week is May 30 – June 5.
Bike to Work Week (BTWW) encourages everyone to commit to commuting to work by bicycle. Active transportation to work promotes healthy lifestyles, increased physical activity, and prevention of chronic disease. it also provides positive economic and environmental benefits including saving money on gas, reducing vehicle emissions and reducing our collective carbon footprint.
Bike to Work Week Kootenays is proud return to our tradition of being the only ‘community’ to fundraise for a local not-for-profit society in conjunction with BTWW. We are raising funds for the West & East Kootenay Brain Injury Association (WEKBIA).
West & East Kootenay Brain Injury Association is a small community organization and the only brain injury association serving the entire Columbia Basin/Boundary region. The organization depends on community grants, donations, and fundraising to continue to provide services. We are asking for your help to collect online pledges to aid them in continuing to provide much needed supports and services to the individuals and families in our communities who are living with an acquired brain injury.
Bike to Work Week Kootenays encourages local businesses and organizations to get involved and join the fun through corporate teams, fundraising events or competitive challenges.
Organizers are engaging in a fun little East vs. West fundraising challenge to see who will come out on top as our fundraising champion!
Donations of $25 or more are eligible for a charitable tax receipt. And we have prizes, prizes, prizes – when you register for BTWW Kootenays you are eligible for random draw prizes, are entered into the provincial Grand Prize draw of an adventure cycling trip to Vietnam and there are additional prizes for those who chose to fundraise including a Grand Prize weekend for two at the Fernie Alpine Resort including two days of lift accessed biking AND two days of downhill bike rentals!
The need for funds is great, said Rachel Cline, an Outreach Worker in the Elk Valley.
“I am the local outreach worker for the EK Brain Injuries Association, the post is only funded for eight hours a week. I cover the communities of Elkford, Sparwood, Fernie and Jaffray. As you can imagine if I travel to see a client in one of the outlaying areas I pretty much use about 50% of my entire weekly time. I currently have 14 active clients on my caseload, and it is really hard to give them the amount of support that they truly require,” Rachel told e-KNOW.
People can register now at www.biketowork.ca/kootenays
Funds raised in the East Kootenay will support WEKBIA programs in the East Kootenay; funds raised in the West stay in the West – so please ensure you sign up to fundraise for your specific region.
