Call for entries to BCWF Awards

Every year the B.C. Wildlife Federation recognizes British Columbians who have achieved outstanding success in conservation and education with awards rooted in B.C.’s conservation heritage.

The Art Downs Memorial Award is presented in recognition of excellence in reporting on conservation and the environment.

The award recognizes factual, science-based journalism focused on the actions of governments, private or public companies, and individuals. Priority consideration will be given to the journalist whose work brings about change in a significant, positive way.

Arthur “Art” Downs was the founder of BC Outdoors Magazine and served as its editor until the late 1970’s.  As a pioneer of environmental journalism, he used the pages of his magazine to inform the public of the conservation issues of the day and encouraged writers to address those issues.  Art served on the Board of Directors of the B.C. Wildlife Federation from 1969 through the 1970s. He was elected to the position of President of BCWF in 1975.

Past winners of the Art Downs Memorial Award include Larry Pynn (Vancouver Sun), Mark Hume (Globe & Mail), Randy Shore (Vancouver Sun and The Province), Martha Wicket (Salmon Arm Observer), Gordon Hoekstra (Prince George Citizen), Dennis Reid (Times Colonist), Tom Davis (BC Outdoors) and Amanda Follett Hosgood (The Tyee).

The Barsby Trophy for Conservationist of the Year was established to honour conservation leaders for their outstanding contributions to protecting B.C.’s natural heritage.

The BCWF Barsby Trophy Conservationist of the Year recognizes an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to conservation in B.C. This award was first presented in 1974 to Ted Barsby, a B.C. leader in environmental stewardship.

The deadline for entries is February 14, 2025. The Awards will be presented at the B.C. Wildlife Federation Annual General Meeting & Convention in April 2025.
