The Community Foundation of the Kootenay Rockies (CFKR) is delighted to announce the recipients of its 2022 community granting program.

In 2022, CFKR’s community granting continued to grow, contributing a total of $56,841.17 to 40 community initiatives. In addition, a total of $28,810.05 was re-invested in the principals of 17 endowment funds, to grow future granting.

“Once again, we are so impressed by the many ways that local non-profits contribute to our communities, and CFKR is thrilled to support these excellent initiatives with a 2022 community grant,” stated Lynnette Wray, CFKR Executive Director.

The Community Foundation of the Kootenay Rockies provided 2022 grants to a wide range of community projects and programs. Each grant application was reviewed by CFKR’s local volunteer committees, with granting decisions ratified by the CFKR Board.

The Elkford Community Fund awarded a total of $3,043.58 in its third year of granting:

• Elkford Biking Club – Elkford Bike Park: $1,618.58;
• Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy – Adult Tech Tutoring: $977;
• Elkford Nordic Ski Club – Sign replacement and repair: $448;

The Sparwood Community Fund granted a total of $4.741.30 to the following projects:

• 

  Sparwood Trails Alliance – Bike wash station: $2,541.30;

• Sparwood Golf Club – purchase of new doors: $1,500;
• Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy – Sparwood Kindergym: $700.

The Fernie Community Fund allocated their $3,573.00 granting total as follows:

• Fernie and District Arts Council – Youth Art Mini-Banners: $1,336.50
• Fernie & District Heritage Society – Art Exhibit: $1,236.50
• Kindergym-Fernie – Play Equipment: $1,000.00

In Cranbrook and area, including the South Country, $14,431.09 was granted to a total of 10 community initiatives, funded by several endowments, including the Cranbrook Community Fund; Seniors’ Enhancement Fund; Kimberley-Cranbrook 2008 Winter Games Arts/Culture and Sports Funds; Knights of Pythias Fund; Arts, Culture, and Heritage Fund; Environment Fund; Outdoor Recreation Fund; and the Neil & Patricia Sinclair Fund.

• Knights of Pythias Community Volunteer Award: $750.

Pending the 2022 award application process, the award recipient will designate this amount to a local qualified donee of their choice.

• CBEEN – Wild Voices environmental education for children & youth: $1,000;
• Cranbrook & District Search and Rescue – Pagers: $1,500;
• Northern BC Friends of Children East Kootenay Branch – Financial Assistance to attend children’s medical appointments: $2,458.05;
• Galloway Curling Club – Purchase of AED: $1,532.03;
• Junior Achievement BC – Financial Literacy Workshops: $1,500;
• Kootenay Employment Services – Tablets for community outreach: $1,400;
• Triangle Women’s Institute (Grasmere) – Historical Panels in Community Hall: $1,500;
• Wildsight – Environmental Education: $1,500;
• Wildsight – Spooner Park Rehabilitation: $1,291

CFKR’s agency/designated endowment funds provided the following grants:

• East Kootenay Community Credit Union Endowment Fund to Cranbrook Salvation Army food programs: $3,249.53;
• Columbia Outdoor School/Blue Lake Camp: $2,536.23;
• Symphony of the Kootenays: $2,284.72;
• Cranbrook History Centre: $1,377.66;
• Cranbrook Community Theatre: $518;
• Community Connections Society of SE BC – Children First early childhood education/support: $1,535.33;
• East Kootenay Foundation for Health: $1,181.34;
• EKFH-Roy & Annabel Maundrell Fund: $236.11.

CFKR’s donor-advised funds granted the following:

• Melodie Hull Fund for Mental Health and Addictions – BC Schizophrenia Society, regional support group: $456.93;
• Community Matters Fund – Foundry East Kootenay: $294.21;
• Greg Fisher Community Fund – Cranbrook Salvation Army: $1,213.18;
• Janice Regnier Fund for Mental Health and Addictions – Cranbrook Salvation Army:  $484.91.

Casey and Corrine Hanemayer Fund:

• Symphony of the Kootenays – Nutcracker Concert: $1,500;
• Symphony of the Kootenays – Mountain Concert: $1,500;
• Cranbrook Community Theatre Society – Bud’s Bench: $1,500;
• Cranbrook Community Forest Society – Trail Maintenance: $1,934.06;
• Cranbrook History Centre – Ed Talks Lecture Series: $5,000;
• East Kootenay SPCA – Veterinary Care: $5,000.

CFKR looks forward to awarding our 2022 scholarships in the coming months, in partnership with School District #5 (Southeast Kootenay):

Dr. Sparling and Mrs. Mary East Memorial Scholarship (Fernie): $1,100.

Mark Mahovlic Memorial Scholarship (Cranbrook): $1,000.

Joyce Metcalfe Memorial Scholarship (Cranbrook): $350.
