Dumped meat attracts bears to Tie Lake
Users of the Tie Lake Transfer Station are being urged to be aware and to properly dispose of ALL garbage and attractants after someone carelessly dumped meat and rotten meat in the metal pile at the transfer station, much to the delight of a sow grizzly and her cub.
The Regional District of East Kootenay reported on Facebook June 7: “Earlier this week (in spite of the multiple signs alerting people to a bear on site), someone dumped a freezer full of rotten meat and left it for these bruins to discover. Given a bear’s keen sense of smell, it didn’t take long for them to move in. Then, in the past 24 hours someone took the time to put a pile of meat in the metal pile (see photos).”
The RDEK reports that it looks like an animal was butchered and the scraps were dumped.
“Whether someone is purposely baiting these bears, or just being totally negligent, it is TOTALLY unacceptable,” the regional government stated.
“We have cleaned up all the attractants and the BC Conservation Officer Service was on site for several hours today; however, they did not locate the bears. Please make sure you put all garbage and attractants in the transtor bin and lock the door.”
