East Kootenay Air & Army Cadets Home-towner

Army Cadet Colton Gibbons from Creston was at the Kootenay Cadet Sports Weekend held at Selkirk College in Castlegar on the weekend January 27-29.

The Sports weekend had 160 cadets from 12 cadet units from the East and West Kootenay. During the weekend, the cadets did a fitness assessment, team sports, swimming and orienteering.

Colton attends Prince Charles Secondary School and has been a member of 1746 Creston Army Cadet Corp for three and half years.

Colton has attended three summer training courses, all at the Vernon Cadet Summer Training Centre. In 2014 he attended General Training, in 2015 he attended Basic Drill & Ceremonial and last year he attended the Expedition Instructor course.

Summer Training and Field Training Exercises are what Colton thinks is great about the cadet program.

In the future, Colton hopes to become a Chief Warrant Officer and participate in the Leadership & Challenge Course.

The Cadet program, which includes Sea, Army and Air Cadets, is the largest government funded youth program in Canada with over 50,000 participants across Canada. The cadet program accepts youth between the ages of 12-18 who have a desire to learn more about the air element of the Canadian Forces, wish to develop the attributes of leadership and good citizenship and who wish to promote physical fitness. While the program is military based, there is no obligation for a cadet to join the Canadian Armed Forces.
