EKISC holding AGM on May 24 in Cranbrook

Are you passionate about preserving the natural beauty of the East Kootenay? Do you want to actively contribute to the conservation of our unique ecosystems? Are you curious about the impacts of invasive species?

If so, we invite you to join us at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the East Kootenay Invasive Species Council (EKISC). This year’s AGM on Wednesday, May 24 promises to be an engaging event with insightful speakers, interactive sessions, and valuable resources.

The EKISC AGM is a fantastic opportunity to learn about the threats posed by invasive species and discover how you can play a crucial role in combating them. Invasive species are non-native plants, animals, and pathogens that have the potential to cause significant harm to our local ecosystems, economy, and human health.

This year’s AGM features two esteemed guest speakers who will share their expertise and insights:

Speaker 1: Dr. Ryan Brook from the University of Saskatchewan. Topic: Pigs in Space: Risks and impacts of Invasive Feral Swine in British Columbia and Beyond.

Speaker 2: Kenneth Sapsford from the BC Ministry of Agriculture and Food. Topic: Searching for Control Options for the invasive North Africa Grass (Ventenata dubia).

Their presentations will shed light on the impact of invasive species and highlight effective strategies to manage and control their spread. This knowledge will empower attendees to make informed decisions and take necessary action to protect our region.

In addition to the guest speakers, we have arranged a speedy table session where participants can interact with experts from the field. This session will provide an opportunity to ask questions, discuss concerns, and exchange ideas with like-minded individuals who share a passion for environmental stewardship.

Topics and speakers include:

Elk River Alliance on Whirling Disease;

Invasive Species Council of BC on Don’t Let it Loose;

Regional District of the East Kootenay  on the Neighbour Invasive Plant Program;

Vahanna Goats on Successes of Goat Grazing with Quesnel Forestry;

Interior Seed and Fertilizer on Discussing the difference between Restoration, Reclamation and Revegetation;

Coffee and snacks will be available to keep you refreshed throughout the event. We understand that access to resources and information is essential, and as such, there will be a wide range of valuable materials available for attendees to take home. These resources will equip you with practical tools and knowledge to identify, report, and prevent the spread of invasive species.
