Evacuation Order and Alert Issued in Baynes Lake area

Evacuation Order and Alert Issued in Baynes Lake area amended (8:40 p.m., Sept. 9.)

The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK), has issued an EVACUATION ORDER and EVACUATION ALERT in an area west of the community of Baynes Lake as tinder dry conditions and gusting winds are fanning the flames of the Kikomun Wildfire (N12478), which is estimated to be four hectares in size.

The Evacuation ORDER includes 14 properties west of Baynes Lake as follows:

  • 3296 PALMER RD
  • 3306 PALMER RD
  • 3326 PALMER RD
  • 3338 PALMER RD
  • 3339 PALMER RD
  • 3348 PALMER RD
  • 3330 SAUNDERS RD
  • 684 SHARPE RD
  • 512 SPRINGER RD
  • 526 SPRINGER RD

In addition, an Evacuation ALERT has been issued for 38 properties as follows:

  • ALL PROPERTIES WEST OF BAYNES LAKE ON CURRIE RD AND BAYNES LAKE RD
  • ALL PROPERTIES SOUTHWEST OF BAYNES LAKE ON SPRINGHILL RD
  • ALL PROPERTIES SOUTH OF BAYNES LAKE ON THE WEST SIDE OF BAYNES LAKE LOOP RD
  • PROPERTIES SOUTHWEST OF BAYNES LAKE ON SUNDOWN LANE, MACMILLAN RD, PALMER RD

A tactical evacuation was done for the homes within the Evacuation Order area this afternoon as the fire moved through the surrounding timber.

“The tactical evacuation was performed by RDEK firefighters in response to the rapidly evolving situation and everyone was able to get out safely,” said Regional Emergency Operations Centre Information Officer Loree Duczek.

A Reception Centre has been established in the Baker Salon at the Prestige Inn in Cranbrook located at 209 Van Horne Street South. Evacuees are asked to check in and register at the Reception Centre or online at ess.gov.bc.ca. It will remain open from 7 to 11 p.m. this evening.

Eight apparatus and 15 firefighters from the Jaffray, Baynes Lake and Elko Fire Departments are responding to the fire in addition to the BC Wildfire Service, which has a Resource Officer, Unit Crew and air support on scene.

The regional emergency information line has been opened at 250-426-2188 or toll free 1-855- 346-2188 and, when not staffed, will have a recorded message with the most updated information.

The RDEK has issued a State of Local Emergency for Electoral Area B, which is required when an Evacuation Order is issued.
