Extreme cold alert continues through weekend

Environment Canada issued another extreme cold alert covering the entire East Kootenay today (Jan. 13), with wind chill temperatures expected to remain in the -35 to -50 C range through the weekend.

ā€œA multi-day episode of very cold wind chills continues through the weekend. Bitterly cold wind chill values near minus 35 to minus 40 except minus 50 in Elk Valley this morning,ā€ Environment Canada reported.

ā€œAn extremely cold arctic ridge lies over B.C. Overnight temperatures between minus 30 to minus 40 degrees Celsius combined with light winds will create dangerous wind chill values of minus 35 or lower.

ā€œThe wind chill values are expected to moderate today for the North Thompson. For the remainder of the regions, these cold wind chill values will continue through the weekend.ā€

Extreme cold puts everyone at risk. Watch for cold related symptoms: shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and colour change in fingers and toes. Cover up.

Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill.

And remember, if itā€™s too cold for you to stay outside, itā€™s too cold for your pet to stay outside.
