Ferry service disrupted by labour dispute

With winter about to rage in Kootenay Pass, the bad weather safety valve in the form of the Kootenay Lake Ferry is being closed off due to labour strife between Western Pacific Marine (WPM) and B.C. General Employees’ Union (BCGEU).

BCGEU went on strike Sunday, November 3 after finding WPM’s latest offer unsatisfactory.

“This will result in reduced sailings for the Kootenay Lake ferry between Balfour and Kootenay Bay. The Balfour/Kootenay Lake Ferry is the only ferry route affected. The Glade and Harrop Cable ferries will continue to run as normally scheduled,” WPM stated on its website.

The ferry schedule for the time being as per WPM:

DEPARTING FROM BALFOUR DEPARTING FROM KOOTENAY BAY
6:30am 7:10am
8:10am 9:00am
4:30pm 5:20pm

Additionally, the Osprey 2000 ferry (pictured) will be out of service Tuesday, November 14 through to Friday, November 17, for required maintenance. The smaller capacity MV Balfour ferry will be in service operating on the regular winter schedule.
