The fourth year of construction is starting and once again FortisBC is returning to the East Kootenay, primarily for work around Sparwood but also some near Kimberley.

FortisBC is continuing work on its gas line at several locations and upgrading an existing pressure regulating station northeast of Industrial 2 Road and Michel Creek Road.

In the Kimberley area the company anticipates continuing upgrades at a few locations along its gas line.

The project’s Information Bulletin was issued earlier this week and provides a summary of activity, work locations and some socio-economic information.

Here are a few highlights and some specific socio-economic info related to our region:

• In 2022, the project contracted $12.7 million worth of goods and services from 102 local vendors.
• 77% of the above expenditure was to Indigenous vendors.
• $2.4 million of the $12.7 million local expenditure was to communities in the East Kootenay (including Cranbrook, Fernie, Fort Steele, Invermere, Kimberley and Sparwood).
• In addition, the project reported $139K in local community investments in 2022, FortisBC said.
