As your future MLA, I will…
Letter to the Editor
With only four days remaining before general election day, I would like to take this opportunity to reach out to my constituents and reinstate how important this election truly is.
May 9 is an opportunity for the people of the Kootenay East to put trust back into their government and elect a candidate of integrity.
Like my party’s leader, Andrew Weaver, I believe in policies over politics. As a collaborative team, legislative members can work together, beyond party lines, to attain the deserved goals of the public. By investing in new ideas, we create a workable economy that places value on stewardship while supporting the needs of British Columbian’s families, businesses and industries. A Green government understands the value of teamwork and calls for electoral reform.
As a public school teacher in the Elk Valley for the past six years, I am convinced that when we work together we build our own future. Greens will increase funding for B.C.’s public education system over four years from $250 million to $1.5 billion. Having students actively engage in community projects is a passion of mine.
I strive to lead by example. Currently, my students are taking part in a school-wide student vote. Supporting democracy and increasing votership in young people is crucial to progress in our region as their education sustains community involvement in the democratic process for years to come.
I am encouraging everyone to vote May 9; to vote honestly and fearlessly. To inform yourself of each party’s platform and make a decision based on what is best for you. As your future MLA, my top three priorities for the Elk Valley are to reestablish B.C. as a leader in public education; to provide free childcare and early childhood education (ECE); and to balance environmental stewardship with growing industry to ensure continued income security for all BC residents.
As your future MLA, I will ensure that the Kootenay East region establishes accountable and sustainable methods of commerce that complement our communities’ love of the outdoors. We need a healthy environment to sustain our current industries. It is my promise that both our economy and our environment will flourish together to sustain the longevity of our homes.
Please take a moment to review the Green Party’s comprehensive platforms for more information.
Thank you for your time.
Yvonne Marie Prest,
Green Party Candidate Kootenay East
