Just over 30 people participated in an Open House in Wasa Wednesday night to learn more about the proposed Wasa Recreation Contribution Service.

“We were pleased to see such a strong turnout,” said Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) Electoral Area E Director Jane Walter. “We recognize not everyone has access to a computer, so it was important for us to be able to have an opportunity for people to come and get information or ask questions about the proposed service.”

The display boards from the Open House have now been posted on the Wasa Recreation Contribution Service project page.

The proposal includes a parcel tax of up to $45/year for everyone within the proposed service area, which would generate up to $28,800 per year to be directed to the Wasa Recreation Society for the operation and maintenance of numerous community amenities including the Wasa Community Hall, outdoor kitchen, tennis courts, ball field and Wasa Lions Trail.

These facilities and amenities are currently managed by volunteers through fundraising and establishment of a service would provide a more stable funding stream to ensure they remain open and available.

The RDEK is seeking direction from the community on whether to proceed with establishing the new service via an Alternative Approval Process (AAP). If 10% of the 708 eligible electors sign and submit elector response forms in opposition, the service cannot proceed without first holding a referendum.

Elector response forms are available on the project page and through the RDEK’s office and can be submitted between October 15 and November 17.
