Here comes the snow again

Environment Canada and Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting have issued weather advisories warning of heavy snowfall for the Elk Valley and southern East Kootenay communities from this evening (Jan. 16) to Wednesday evening.

The Elk Valley is expected to receive from 15 to 25 cm of snow, according to Environment Canada, while the southern East Kootenay, including Elko, Grasmere and Roosville, as well as Boundary, Lower Arrow Lake – including Highway 6, West Kootenay – including Creston, Trail, Rossland, Nelson, Kootenay Lake – southern section are expected to receive between 15 and 20 cm.

ā€œA cold front will combine with a Pacific low pressure system and bring snow, heavy at times into southern B.C. Snow will start tonight and become heavy overnight,ā€ Environment Canada said.

A prolonged period of snow advisory is in place for the Columbia Valley, Golden and Kootenay National Park areas.

Mainroad forecasts snowfall of up to five cm for Tuesday in the Columbia Valley and continuing into Wednesday, increasing in accumulation amounts of up to 10 cm.

Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow. Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions.

Snowfall warnings are issued when significant snowfall is expected.

If driving, please leave a safe following distance to allow Mainroad crews to perform their work in a safe manner.
