High-speed flight from RCMP ends on CPR track
A couple believed to be from northern B.C. are in custody following a high-speed stolen vehicle flight from police and later putting a CP Rail train and community in jeopardy.
On Dec. 2, at about 4:05 p.m., a police officers from the Integrated Road Safety Unit attempted to stop a red Ford F350 pickup truck that had been travelling east on Highway 3/93 near Cranbrook.
The truck was travelling at a high rate of speed and did not stop for police. While attempting to flee police the pickup truck passed multiple vehicles and continued to travel in the wrong lane, nearly causing a head-on collision.
The pickup was last seen on Tie Lake Road near Jaffray.
A few hours later, this same vehicle was reported by Canadian Pacific Raliway employees as being stuck on the railway tracks.
“Alert employees were able to stop their train in time to avoid hitting the pickup and were able to provide details to police on their direction of travel,” reported Sgt. DG Erichsen of East Kootenay Traffic Services (EKTS) RCMP.
EKTS officers, Cranbrook RCMP officers and Police Dog Services attended the scene and were soon able to arrest a 35-year-old female and 26-year-old male, believed to be from northern B.C.
They are scheduled to appear in Cranbrook Provincial Court later this month on multiple charges, including dangerous driving, flight from police, theft of a motor vehicle and possession of stolen property.
Police are asking if anyone witnessed this pickup truck in the early evening of Dec. 2 to contact East Kootenay Traffic Services at 250-420-4244.
