Keep firewood away from your home
With spring on the way, the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) says it is time to think about a plan for your woodpile.
Wood piled against a house is a major fire hazard. Moving your firewood pile may be a key factor that allows your home to survive a wildfire. Woodpiles should be stored at least 10 metres away from your home.
If possible, consider using a firewood shed. A firewood shed typically features fire-resistant roofing, siding, venting for wood curing, and a non-flammable base (paving stones, gravel, bare dirt, sand) that should extend 1.5 metres around the structure.
