Teenage musician Nell Smith has launched a kickstarter to help fund the completion of her follow up record to the collaborative album with The Flaming Lips.

Fifteen-year-old Nell’s first record, Where the Viaduct Looms, was released globally in late 2021 to critical acclaim and international media attention with coverage on rollingstone.com and a live performance on the Stephen Colbert Show.

Since the release, Fernie resident Nell toured the UK and USA with The Flaming Lips with appearances at legendary venues in San Francisco, LA, London and Glasgow.

The new album is a work of original songs with a number of collaborators including Penelope Isles and local band Shred Kelly and will be released globally on the record label Bella Union in 2024.

Nell has been writing songs since the age of 12 and the album contains songs about struggles with mental health, relationships, small town life and work.

Speaking about the project, Nell said, “It’s really exciting to see the album coming together and to be working with a band to get out and play the songs live. The production process has been really interesting and I’ve traveled to record in the UK with Jack and Lily Wolter of Penelope Isles who have been amazing mentors and collaborators.”

“It has been eye opening to see how much a project like this actually costs and up until now it has been funded by working part time jobs in restaurants as well as the bank of mum and dad. If successful, the kickstarter campaign will fund the final mixing and mastering of the album which is the final step before a release plan is worked out.”

Nell is looking to raise $10,000CAN via this Kickstarter Campaign and backers have the opportunity to select a variety of rewards including the LP itself, limited edition gifts, VIP tickets to future shows, signed merchandise, handwritten lyrics from the album, executive producer credits and framed gold discs.

Nell continued, “My ultimate goal is to get the album out, tour extensively and use the proceeds to help fund going to music school. I’m really grateful for all the support I have had so far and I’m really hoping that people want to hear this new music and want to support the project. Every little bit really does help.”
