Local cadets prove to be effective speakers
On February 20, Cranbrook RCMP had the honour of being part of a judging team for local cadets in an effective speaking presentation.
The 552 Key City Squadron had six cadets vying to represent the squadron and Cranbrook at the upcoming Regional Competition.
The Effective Speaking program is an experience in individual development. Cadets learn to organize and present ideas, opinions and information in a logical, compelling manner. In doing so they build confidence in their self-expression and take responsibility for the most important skill of adult life – communication.
Cadets compose a five to six-minute prepared speech on one of eight pre-selected topics. This year all topics were focussed on the 100th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Air Force.
After cadets deliver their prepared speech, they are given an impromptu topic and three minutes to think about how they will present that topic in a two to three-minute speech.
“All the cadets who participated are to be applauded for their amazing speeches and their ability to get up in front of peers and parents to present their speeches,” said Cst. Katie Forgeron. “We were excited to be a part of the judging team and wish the cadets success in the upcoming regional competition.”
The top speakers moving on to represent the 552 Key City Squadron are Sergeant Bell and Flight Sergeant Wishart.
The Regional Competition takes place on April 6, with cadets from the five squadrons in our local area taking part. The top speaker will move on to the provincial competition.
“These six cadets worked very hard on overcoming their fears and facing their challenges. To us they are all winners,” added Captain Lori-Lee Bott, Commanding Officer of 552 Key City Air Cadet Squadron.
