Local landmarks lighting up blue Feb. 22

Guiding Lights Across BC is back for 2022.

On Tuesday, February 22, more than 100 landmarks across the province will be lit in the colour blue – the well-known colour of Girl Guides – to celebrate the Guiding sisterhood.

Landmarks will include Sparwood’s Titan Truck, Cranbrook City Hall and Cranbrook Public Library, along with BC Place, Mr. PG, the Olympic Cauldron, Science World, and the Legislative Assembly of B.C.

This is the second-annual celebration of Guiding Lights Across BC, an opportunity created in February 2021 to provide a safe activity for girls to stay connected and celebrate together during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Guiding members will again be making blue lanterns, creating special crafts, going on lit-up neighbourhood walks, and enjoying other safe activities next week.

The public is also invited to ‘shine your Guiding light’ by lighting your homes in blue.

Every year on February 22, Girl Guides celebrate World Thinking Day, a day of international friendship. It is an opportunity to increase public awareness on issues affecting girls and young women, as well as celebrate the founding of Girl Guides and foster connections between the 10 million Guiding members around the world.

In British Columbia, we have thousands of girls and women who are members of Girl Guides of Canada. We have Girl Guide programs in nearly every community of B.C., and our girls and volunteers ‘light up’ their communities year-round through leadership and community service.

“Our Girl Guide members light up their communities every day with fun, friendship, and a commitment to creating A Better World, By Girls,” said Diamond Isinger, Provincial Commissioner of the Girl Guides of Canada.

“Despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, Guiding is going strong in British Columbia with thousands of girls enrolled in our Girl Guide programs. With in-person activities, outdoor adventure days to learn camp skills, special events exploring the arts, online science workshops, and more, girls are connected to the sisterhood of Guiding and accessing the positive support that they need now more than ever.”
