MLA speaks to rising housing costs in region

Kootenay East MLA Tom Shypitka addressed the British Columbia Legislature Feb. 14 on the critical issue of affordable housing.

Shypitka said this issue now affects communities throughout British Columbia, beyond the big cities, including his riding of Kootenay East.

Shypitka said the numbers are alarming, and it seems as though this government has done little to address this issue.

For example, in Cranbrook the average home price has soared to $485,521 which is a 55.5% increase since 2019. In the neighbouring riding that includes Revelstoke, and a bit further away in the Shuswap, prices for detached homes have risen to $803,000, an increase of 37%, Shypitka pointed out.

He added all levels of government  need to work to ensure innovative solutions are being found to tackle this issue head-on.
