Kootenay-Columbia Member of Parliament Wayne Stetski today introduced a Private Members Bill amending the Navigation Protection Act to protect the riding’s lakes and rivers.

“Passage of this bill would protect our lakes and rivers for generations to come,” he said.

The Navigation Protection Act protects the public’s right to navigation and marine safety in navigable waters by regulating the construction of bridges, dams, etc., to ensure boaters can still travel the waterways; and by making sure those lakes and streams aren’t polluted with sewage, waste, or other noxious substances.

In 2012, the Conservative government removed most of Canada’s navigable waters from protection, to open the doors to pipelines and to the oil and gas industry.

“The people of Kootenay-Columbia and indeed all Canadians know how important water is to who we are as a country,” Stetski said. “By putting Kootenay-Columbia’s lakes and rivers back into the Act, we protect not only the natural environment itself, but the recreation, heritage, and economies that are dependent on free access to these resources.”

Stetski’s Bill puts 12 lakes, including Columbia Lake (pictured above), and 21 rivers, including the Flathead and Kicking Horse Rivers, under the Act’s protection.

“I am proud to play a role in protecting Kootenay-Columbia’s magnificent lakes and rivers,” Stetski said.
