Name consultation would be a positive step toward reconciliation
Letter to the Editor
I read e-KNOW regularly. Recently there have been some letters/columns to the editor about the Spirit of the Rockies Festival name. I want to add my opinion about this, please.
An excellent article about this was written by Joyce Green. This article contains very good info about the history of this area. To me, this article sounds a bit angry, and I partly understand why. I must say that I agree fully that injustices were done towards the Indigenous peoples, who were living here far before us non-Indigenous peoples arrived.
I have often thought the name ‘Spirit of the Rockies,’ to be a bit silly for this event.
My suggestion is for the organizers of this event, to contact the local Indigenous community, eg. Ktunaxa. Ask these people what they would like for a name. Also, ask them what they would like for ‘contents’ for this festival.
In my mind, this would be a positive step toward reconciliation!
