Nominations open for Woman of the Year 2017

Since 1984, the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) Cranbrook Club has recognized 36 well-deserving women of the East Kootenay who have worked tirelessly to make their community a better place for all to live, through their dedication to their projects while maintaining a solid family life. These women were nominated by the people of the East Kootenay and the club is looking for nominations for the 2017 ceremony.

For the past 33 years, all criteria have remained the same, and any East Kootenay woman whose extraordinary talents in enriching the lives, especially of women and children, is eligible. The nominee’s contributions to the education and/or advancement of women and how she has inspired and enriched the lives of those around her by her endeavours must be shown by the nominating committee.

The CFUW-Cranbrook’ Club’s use of the word “Education” does not necessarily carry an academic meaning, as it can be more widely interpreted to mean supporting and encouraging learning.

The nominee’s contributions and achievement may have taken place in the last year or over a period of time. Her efforts may have been part of paid employment, voluntary or a combination of both.

The women who have been honoured in the past by this award are very much admired and respected by those with whom they come into contact. Often these women are “unsung heroines” of the community. (See list of all women selected to be Woman of the Year below). For further information, please visit our website.

This year’s deadline is Tuesday, February 14, 2017 at noon. You can mail or deliver your nomination package to the Chairman of the CFUW Cranbrook Club’s Woman of the Year Committee, Cathryn Henley, at 805 – 29th Avenue South, Cranbrook, B.C., V1C 3K5.

The club’s intention is to celebrate Woman of the Year at 4 p.m., at the College of the Rockies on Wednesday, March 8, which is International Women’s Day.

The Cranbrook Club has 12 members locally and is a member of CFUW National, a non-political, voluntary, self- funded, bilingual and non-governmental organization of women university graduates in 110 clubs across Canada that works to improve the status of women and girls, education, peace, justice and human rights. CFUW holds special consultative status at the United Nations (ECOSOC) and belongs to the Sectoral Committee of education of the Canadian Commission for UNESCO. CFUW is the largest of 61 national affiliates of the International Federation of University Women (IFUW).
