Outdoor Rec Council launches new guide

British Columbia’s outdoor spaces are becoming more inclusive, thanks to a new guide from the Outdoor Recreation Council of BC (ORCBC).

Outdoors for All: An Inspiration Guide for Creating Welcoming Outdoor Recreation Spaces shares real-life examples and simple ideas to help outdoor groups create spaces where everyone feels at home.

The guide shows that even small changes can have a big impact. Whether it’s mentoring newcomers, inviting groups that aren’t usually represented, or updating trail signs to be more inclusive, these efforts can bring communities closer and make outdoor spaces more enjoyable for everyone.

Some of the inspiring stories in the guide include BC Parks helping new Canadians enjoy outdoor activities and the British Columbia Mountaineering Club’s efforts to build a more inclusive community.

“The overarching theme is that every group can do something to make their corner of the outdoors more welcoming, and it doesn’t need to be grandiose or expensive,” said Ryan Stuart, the author of the inspiration guide. “Even a few words can make a big difference.”

Louise Pedersen, Executive Director of ORCBC, highlights why this work matters: “When we make outdoor spaces more inclusive, we’re not just reflecting values like fairness and community. We’re also strengthening recreation groups by bringing in more volunteers, enabling new partnerships, unlocking new funding, and creating a stronger sense of belonging for everyone.”

With Outdoors for All, ORCBC hopes to spark a shift in how outdoor recreation groups approach inclusivity, showing that even small steps can lead to big rewards for both organizations and communities.

Outdoors for All is funded by the BC Parks License Plate Program.
