Pass on the passes as storm approaches
If you can, pass on traveling local highway passes today as Environment Canada has issued a winter storm warning for Kootenay and Rogers passes, among others.
Hazardous winter conditions are expected for Highway 3 – Paulson Summit to Kootenay Pass, Trans-Canada Highway – Eagle Pass to Rogers Pass, Coquihalla Highway – Hope to Merritt, and Highway 3 – Hope to Princeton via Allison Pass tonight through Sunday evening.
Snowfall accumulation of 25 to 40 cm is expected except up to 50 cm for the Coquihalla Summit.
“A storm system crossing B.C. this weekend will bring heavy snow to the mentioned routes. Periods of snow is forecast to intensify overnight with heavy snow expected through the day on Sunday,” Environment Canada stated.
“With warm air in the valleys, lower elevations of the highway routes will be raining. Strong gusty winds are expected to accompany the heavy snow on Sunday that will further reduce visibility in blowing snow.
“Conditions are expected to improve later Sunday night. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow.”
“Weather in the mountains can change suddenly resulting in hazardous driving conditions. Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve. Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions,” Environment Canada suggests.
The site shiftintowinter.ca reminds drivers to know before you go. Adjust to winter driving behaviour and use winter tires and chains. Road conditions are available at drivebc.ca.
