Prime Minister Trudeau resigns
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau this morning (Jan. 6) announced he is resigning.
Trudeau said he will remain in office until the Liberal Party of Canada chooses a new leader. Parliament will be prorogued until March 24.
“Last night, over dinner, I told my kids about the decision that I’m sharing with you today. I intend to resign as party leader, as prime minister, after the party selects its next leader through a robust nationwide competitive process,” he said during a morning news conference.
“This country deserves a real choice in the next election and it has become clear to me that if I’m having to fight internal battles, I cannot be the best option in that election.”
Trudeau, 53, has been prime minister for nine years.
The next federal election must take place on or before October 20. Trudeau’s resignation could mean an election will arrive sooner than that.
