Sloppy mess likely on the way
Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting Ltd. is warning motorists to be prepared for a variety of weather conditions over the next 72 hours.
âThere is a chance of periodic flurries, particularly along the Highway 93/95 corridor. All areas are experiencing a warming trend and crews are applying de-icing chemical throughout the area. This will produce slushy conditions as existing snow and ice melts so be prepared and make sure windshield washer fluids are full and wipers in good condition,â Mainroad stated in a media release this afternoon (Dec. 5).
âItâs going to be a sloppy mess out there for the next 36-48 hours. Salt and de-icing materials can attract wildlife to road surfaces so please SLOW DOWN and watch for wildlife,â Mainroad added.
Motorists in the Wycliffe area of Highway 95A should watch for a large herd of Elk reported moving through the area, it added.
While rising temperatures may bring slush and wet, it can also produce black ice, Mainroad warned.
âBe advised that warming conditions along with rising humidity can present the risk of rapidly forming frost and black ice sections, particularly in shaded areas, bridge decks and near water. These conditions can change very quickly so donât be caught unaware by what can appear to be bare pavement,â it said.
Highways throughout the region remain in winter conditions, from bare to slush to snow and ice covered to black ice.
Mainroad Crews are patrolling but please slow down and be prepared for sudden changes in surface condition. Temperatures can be expected in the zero to -5C range for the next several days.
Watch for crews and equipment and give them plenty of room. Please #DRIVESAFE and visit www.drivebc.ca for the latest road conditions.
