Snowfall warning covers entire East Kootenay

Environment Canada has this morning (Jan. 8) issued a snowfall warning covering the entire region, with 10 to 30 cm of the cold white stuff expected between today and Wednesday (Jan. 10).

The Elk Valley is expected to receive the most snow, with 15 to 20 cm, while the rest of the East Kootenay is expected to get about 10 cm, Environment Canada forecasts.

High country passes are also going to become potentially treacherous with Kootenay Pass/Highway 3 expected to receive 30 to 50 cm, and Rogers Pass/Highway 1 should receive about 15 cm.

ā€œA strong low pressure system will arrive today. Snow will develop late in the day and continue through tonight and into the day on Tuesday. Snow should ease to flurries on Tuesday night and then will taper off on Wednesday morning,ā€ Environment Canada said.

Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions.

Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow. There may be a significant impact on rush hour traffic in urban areas.

Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting has also issued a snowfall warning, forecasting 25 to 30 cm of snow for the Elk Valley and 15 to 20 cm of snow for the rest of the region.

Motorists should use caution, drive to the conditions, and prepare for delays caused by the weather. Drivers should checkĀ www.drivebc.caĀ before heading out.

Snowfall warnings are issued when significant snowfall is expected.

Mainroadā€™s 24-hour communications and dispatch office will pass on all your observations and concerns to crews when contacted.
