The growing threat of Chronic Wasting Disease
BC United Leader Kevin Falcon and Kootenay East MLA Tom Shypitka this morning (March 1) released the following joint statement in response to the significant and emerging threat of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) to British Columbia’s wildlife.
“Chronic Wasting Disease represents a considerable threat to wildlife in British Columbia and given the disease’s capacity for rapid environmental transmission it is unfortunate the NDP has not updated response mechanisms accordingly.
“A BC United government would take immediate action to bolster British Columbia’s response capabilities by implementing the following:
- Emergency Response Fund:BC United will set up a fund specifically for quick action upon detecting CWD-positive cases in cervids. This fund will cover necessary expenses such as operations, travel, regional depots and contracted resources, ensuring a swift and efficient response.
- In-province Testing Facility and Safe Disposal Measures:A commitment to establish a local, accredited laboratory that will significantly cut down on testing turnaround times, enabling faster responses to CWD detections.
“A BC United government is ready to implement these solutions, ensuring the protection of our wildlife and the safety of our communities.”
